Neuro-Linguistic Programming

What is NLP?

“What is it that you really do” Asks my Mother

“I teach people how to use their brain by mastering elements of Neuro-Linguistic Programming ” I answer, (quite honestly I think)

“My Brain hurts when you talk like that you smart arse”

I find myself repeating Tad James, Grand Master of NLP trainers when I say…

“Mother, its like hypnosis”

“That’s just psychological rubbish” she blasts ” You were always a bit mental. I blame the father”

We leave it at that, as father glares at Mother. Mother has returned to constructing theoretical box girder bridges with her Lego set

Its is a fair question though

What on Earth is this thing NLP? And how does it relate to hypnosis?

NLP stands for Neuro-Linguistic Programming, a users manual for the brain

Like many social and human sciences it is a behavioural discipline which is regarded as part art and part science. Some professionals have described it a “user manual for the human being”

Owing to the practical aspect and incredible effectiveness of NLP this description may be very close to the truth.

There is a strong link between thinking and behaviour and many of our behaviours are caused by triggers which create associations with past events in our lives.

There is a strong relationship between the studies of the unconscious mind, hypnosis and NLP. Understanding how our minds respond to events, we can “program” ourselves to react and proact more appropriately and this can be of enormous value to all humans.

Just imagine not getting angry and ruining your own day next time a taxi driver cuts you off!

NLP is also about the study and application of excellence. Although there are many definitions the most important aspect of NLP is the fact that all of it is based on pragmatism and modelling; If it works, then a technique is included.

Many people around the world have experienced radical improvements in their lives after applying some of the basic principles of NLP such as;

  • Become happier within themselves, (dont rely on other people to be happy)
  • Set realistic goals and achieve them
  • Finding a purpose in life, feel the purpose every day
  • Making important decisions and understand why they are important
  • Controlling emotions which may be inappropriate such as anger
  • Increase of focus in work and play, (many successful business people and sports people receive coaching in NLP)
